By now all of you should have received your blog and essay marks for Theories and Politics of Social Justice. I wanted to just to say a few words about your work to help you think about the feedback I offered and to consider what changes (if any) you need to make for future assessments.
The most successful essays were those that:
–had a clear essay structure (with an identifiable introduction and conclusion)
–defined key terms
–drew on texts and ideas beyond those we discussed on the course
–offered a nuanced analysis of the problem and possible solutions
The difficult thing about writing essays on a course like this is trying to balance one’s passion for the topic with the conventions of an academic essay which require nuanced analyses and the presentation and discussion of the evidence for particular claims. This is extremely hard to do, so, for those of you who perhaps didn’t do as well as you might have expected, don’t despair! Writing successful academic essays is a skill that must be developed and honed over time. If you have questions about essay writing strategies, please do get in touch.
I will also be approaching a few of your fellow students to see if they’d be willing to circulate their essays so that those of you who might need a bit more help can model some best practices as demonstrated in their essays.
